Membership Membership requirements and information for beginners. It is important that potential members are able to meet the minimum Amateur Rowing Association swimming requirement which is 100 meters in light clothing. Although it is rare for members to find themselves in the water, it is in the interest of all members to be able to exceed the minimum requirement. Capsize drills are practised in a safe environment and certificates issued to members who complete the exercise. Failure to meet the standard would not preclude membership but the inability to meet its requirements should be reported to the Safety Advisor. For further details of safety matters look under the "About Us" heading. Technically rowing is a very precise discipline requiring great skill and the highest qualities of teamwork. The basics enabling a novice to enjoy an outing can be learned fairly quickly but to become proficient and win at the highest level requires time and dedication. Fortunately, to take care of variations in class, there are categories ranging from novice to elite and for those who do not wish to race there is an increasing interest in social rowing. We recognise that newcomers or beginners may initially not know how seriously they wish to take up the sport. To help in making the decision, newcomers are provided with coached introductory sessions at a minimal charge of £3-50 per session following which they are encouraged to apply for full membership. Coaching is undertaken by qualified coaches and senior members. Club sessions are on Sunday mornings from 9:00am and additionally during the summer months on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00pm although the boathouse is usually open every weekday from 9.00am until noon. When the evenings become too dark for rowing, circuit training is arranged. It is hoped that every new member that comes to 'have a go' will aspire to compete for the Club. With the approval of the Captain or Committee, crews enter and travel to regattas as they wish and we endeavour to support all events pertaining to the Lower Thames and Medway. Other major events of interest to the club are the early season Head of the River Races that are held on the Thames between Mortlake and Putney. Currently, the majority of members are either seniors (over 18) or veterans but we welcome members from fourteen years of age. Anybody considering becoming a member or simply interested in ‘having a go’ is invited to contact the Club by Email or call at the Club any Sunday morning at around 10:30am, if it is not too busy you may get an outing in a boat.
